Comedy Through Contrast in Animation

AnimSchool Tips: Creating Contrast in Animation

Contrast is at the root of every form of entertainment. Contrast creates rhythm, energy, and interest. It applies to all genres, whether romance, action, or even comedy.
In animation there is no one tool to create contrast, contrast can be created using timing, spacing, scale, and even shape. Contrast not only makes a scene feel more natural and entertaining but also helps hook the audience in by creating the unexpected.

In this snippet from a LIVE AnimSchool class, instructor, Luke Randall, dives deep into contrast by analyzing one of the penultimate creatures of contrast – Scrat from Ice Age.
Scrat’s animation is frantic, but still large and contained, funny and serious, and ultimately full of contrast and comedy
