Opening Ceremony

SIGGRAPH 2018 officially opens with a welcome from Conference Chair, Roy C. Anthony, remarks from the ACM SIGGRAPH leadership, and the presentation of the ACM SIGGRAPH Awards, which recognize individuals who have made a significant contribution to the computer graphics community through their research, teaching, service, or writing.

AWARD TALKS

Among the most prestigious of honors in computer graphics, ACM SIGGRAPH awards are presented to people who are leaders in the field, or destined to become so. The award talks session at the annual SIGGRAPH conference gives winners the opportunity to expound on their background and research.

„This session will focus on innovation, creativity, and community building that stemmed from the gathering of like-minded individuals at the SIGGRAPH conferences. Mary Whitton, Chair of the SIGGRAPH History Committee, will do a presentation entitled “Technology Innovations that Kickstarted Raster Graphics.” Darcy Gerbarg, Chair of the first SIGGRAPH Art Show in 1981, will present “How the SIGGRAPH Art Shows originated and why Tom Duff’s 1-page computer program was exhibited in the first art show.” Jan Searleman and Bonnie Mitchell, along with students Megan Miazgowicz, Amanda Glass, and Jack Spencer, will present „“Preserving the Past: SIGGRAPH Art Shows from 1980 to the present““ and showcase the new ACM SIGGRAPH Art Show Archive. „

This panel celebrates the first fully functioning 3D AR/VR system: real-time, see-through, stereo, perspective display; and two different head trackers: ultrasonic and mechanical (the “Sword of Damocles”).
