SIGGRAPH 2018 für uns daheim: Die Live-Stream Mitschnitte vom Montag, 13. August 2018

Opening Ceremony

SIGGRAPH 2018 officially opens with a welcome from Conference Chair, Roy C. Anthony, remarks from the ACM SIGGRAPH leadership, and the presentation of the ACM SIGGRAPH Awards, which recognize individuals who have made a significant contribution to the computer graphics community through their research, teaching, service, or writing.

Among the most prestigious of honors in computer graphics, ACM SIGGRAPH awards are presented to people who are leaders in the field, or destined to become so. The award talks session at the annual SIGGRAPH conference gives winners the opportunity to expound on their background and research.

„This session will focus on innovation, creativity, and community building that stemmed from the gathering of like-minded individuals at the SIGGRAPH conferences. Mary Whitton, Chair of the SIGGRAPH History Committee, will do a presentation entitled “Technology Innovations that Kickstarted Raster Graphics.” Darcy Gerbarg, Chair of the first SIGGRAPH Art Show in 1981, will present “How the SIGGRAPH Art Shows originated and why Tom Duff’s 1-page computer program was exhibited in the first art show.” Jan Searleman and Bonnie Mitchell, along with students Megan Miazgowicz, Amanda Glass, and Jack Spencer, will present „“Preserving the Past: SIGGRAPH Art Shows from 1980 to the present““ and showcase the new ACM SIGGRAPH Art Show Archive. „

This panel celebrates the first fully functioning 3D AR/VR system: real-time, see-through, stereo, perspective display; and two different head trackers: ultrasonic and mechanical (the “Sword of Damocles”).

Babelsberg, Potsdam: VR NOW Con & Awards

The VR NOW Con & Awards are back in Potsdam, Germany on November 14+15! Let’s come together and celebrate this exciting VR-year of 2018. To foster the best possible discussions, we invite the brightest minds to share their wisdom on stage. As VR is part of a bigger picture we’re proud to announce that VR NOW Con & Awards are part of the newly formed MediaTech Con.

What is the MediaTech Con?

MediaTech Con is the key convention for future media technologies and why they are essential for other industries, manufacturing and trade. Together with Changing the Picture (CTPiX), we offer a common platform with pioneering talks and workshops within a two-day program in the film-studio grounds of Babelsberg. Creative visionaries meet technology experts and discuss the facts and trends about film, virtual and mixed reality, digital engineering or data visualisation. And the best thing:

For the price of one VR NOW Con & Awards ticket, you will have access to three complemental conferences!

This year we will focus on location-based VR, cinematic VR and applied VR. Location-based VR is nothing new, but it’s becoming more and more significant as an economically successful model. Since equipment is still expensive and consumers are only slowly adapting, the trend leads to location-based VR, which makes Virtual Reality experiences accessible to everyone. Cinemas, arcades, shopping malls and entertainment parks are already proving their investments worth.

Never heard of the term „Applied VR“? Well, we came up with it. And with it we are referring to VR technology applied to processes of the real world. For example VR apartment viewings, staff training or education enhanced with VR and VR prototyping in the automotive industry. Everything where the application of VR comes in handy, without limiting it to industrial VR only.

The CHANGING THE PICTURE Technology Conference discusses how storytelling and technology are intertwined. It showcases the newest expertise for technologies shaping content production and distribution for TV, cinema and internet. CTPIX18 is the 6th Edition of the highly specialized event with a growing community. CHANGING THE PICTURE addresses national and international participants from across the film, television and digital production sectors, ranging from storytellers to producers and creative technologists, as well as broadcasters and distributors.

VR / Animation: Google Doodles/Google Spotlight Stories: Back to the Moon

Die Reise zum Mond – Zu Ehren von Georges Méliès

Zu Ehren des französischen Illusionisten und Regisseurs Georges Méliès haben die Mitarbeiter von Google Doodle, Google Spotlight Stories, Google Arts & Culture und Cinémathèque Française gemeinsam das erste interaktive 360°-Doodle in VR geschaffen.

The Google Doodle, Google Spotlight Stories, Google Arts & Culture, & Cinémathèque Française teams have collaborated to create the first-ever Virtual Reality (VR) / 360° interactive Doodle to celebrate the life and artistry of French illusionist and film director Georges Méliès. Produced by Nexus Studios.

Danke an Carole Martinato und Robert Kriegel fürs „drauf aufmerksam machen“!!!

Hier die VR Version von Back to the Moon

Hier die Kurzfilm Version (theatrical)

Produced by Nexus Studios and co-directed by Fx Goby and Doodles’ Hélène Leroux, ‘Back to the Moon’ celebrates pioneering illusionist and filmmaker Georges Méliès.

In a first-of-its-kind collaboration between Google Doodles, Google Spotlight Stories, Google Arts and Culture, Cinématèque Française and Nexus Studios, the film launched as the first ever virtual reality (VR) / 360 interactive Google Doodle.

Transporting the viewer inside his magical world via some of his best known films, styles, techniques and characters, the film also features a Mathieu Alvado score recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra.

Says Fx:
“Méliès is one of my personal heroes, and being able to pay tribute to him in such a visible way is both a rare opportunity and a huge privilege.  There’s nothing in the film which hasn’t been considered through the Méliès lens; the shape of the stars, the contents on the table, every object has a story behind it which is linked to him.”

Laurent Manonni, director of heritage at The Cinématèque Française notes of Méliès:
“I have no doubt he would have been flattered to find himself in the limelight via today’s first virtual reality / 360 Google Doodle, propelled around the world thanks to a new medium with boundless magical powers.”

Enjoy the 360 video above or enjoy the full VR experience on mobile, Cardboard or Daydream by downloading the Google Spotlight stories app for iOS or Android or on Steam.
