Jan Pinkava has worked in the animation industry for thirty years and won numerous awards with his films. During his time at the animation studio Pixar, he won an Oscar® for his short film GERI’S GAME in 1998. As creator and co-director, Pinkava was also instrumental in RATATOUILLE’s Oscar® win for the best animated feature film in 2008. In addition, Pinkava was involved in the creation of the innovative format Google Spotlight Stories as co-founder and creative director. There, he developed new forms of interactive storytelling.

Since fall 2022, Prof. Andreas Hykade has been working as Head of Animation Directing at the Animationsinstitut. Before dedicating his focus to this position, Prof. Hykade headed the Animationsinstitut for eight years and contributed greatly to the institute’s reputation and success. „The person is more important than the project“—Andreas Hykade made sure to emphasize this principle throughout his tenure. The Animationsinstitut is built on the cooperation of students, lecturers, and employees, he said.
Jan Pinkava wants to remain faithful to this philosophy: „I like people much more than machines. Our job is to give our students the tools to create great art with real values.“

Im Rahmen der Fachkonferenz FMX – Film and Media Exchange in Stuttgart stellte das Animationsinstitut der Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg heute (26.04.2023) seinen neuen Leiter vor: Jan Pinkava. Der britisch-tschechisch-amerikanische Animator, Regisseur, Drehbuchautor und Oscar®-Preisträger übernimmt ab Juni 2023 die Leitung des Instituts und tritt die Nachfolge von Prof. Andreas Hykade an.
„Ich fühle mich sehr geehrt, zum neuen Leiter des Animationsinstituts ernannt worden zu sein. Das Institut genießt einen außergewöhnlichen Ruf und verfügt über engagierte Mitarbeitende, brillante Dozierende, hervorragende Absolvent*innen sowie überaus begabte Studierende. Was könnte erstrebenswerter sein, als auf diesem Erbe aufzubauen?“, betont Pinkava.
Arne Braun, Staatssekretär im Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst Baden-Württemberg, ergänzt: „Mit Jan Pinkava gewinnen wir einen erstklassigen Kenner der Branche, der große Lust hat, seine internationalen Erfahrungen in einem neuen und jungen Umfeld einzubringen. Jan Pinkava arbeitet seit dreißig Jahren in der Animationsbranche und gewann mit seinen Filmen zahlreiche Preise. Während seiner Zeit beim Animationsstudio Pixar erhielt er 1998 für seinen Kurzfilm GERI’S GAME einen Oscar®. Als Creator und Co-Regisseur trug Pinkava zudem maßgeblich zum Oscar®-Gewinn von RATATOUILLE als bester abendfüllender Animationsfilm 2008 bei. Darüber hinaus war er Mitbegründer und Creative Director von Google Spotlight Stories. Dort entwickelte er neue Formen des interaktiven Geschichtenerzählens.

Für Prof. Thomas Schadt (Direktor Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg) ist insbesondere diese Vielseitigkeit Pinkavas entscheidend: „Seine einzigartige Karriere als Künstler ergänzt sich ausgezeichnet mit seiner langjährigen Erfahrung in führenden Industrie-Positionen. Hierdurch wird Jan Pinkava die Studierenden nicht nur begleiten, sondern auch begeistern können.“

Seit Herbst vergangenen Jahres ist Prof. Andreas Hykade als Head of Animation Directing tätig. Zuvor leitete Prof. Hykade acht Jahre lang das Institut äußerst erfolgreich. „Der Mensch ist wichtiger als das Projekt“ – diese Maxime betonte Andreas Hykade stets während seiner Amtszeit. Das Animationsinstitut lebe vom Miteinander der Studierenden, Dozierenden und Mitarbeitenden.
Jan Pinkava möchte an dieser Philosophie festhalten: „Mir sind Menschen viel lieber als Computer. Unsere Aufgabe ist es, unseren Studierenden das Handwerkszeug zu vermitteln, damit sie große Kunst mit echten Wertvorstellungen kreieren können.“
Jan Pinkava startet ab Juni 2023 seine Tätigkeit als Leiter des Animationsinstituts. Seit Herbst vergangenen Jahres hatte Prof. Thomas Schadt das Amt des Institutsleiters interimsweise übernommen.
