Behind the Scenes Featurette | The Last Duel | 20th Century Studios

Director Ridley Scott goes behind the scenes of his definitive epic #TheLastDuel. Only in theaters October 15. 20th Century Studios’ “The Last Duel,” a gripping tale of betrayal and vengeance set against the brutality of 14th century France directed by visionary filmmaker and four-time Academy Award® nominee Ridley Scott (“The Martian,” “Black Hawk Down,” “Gladiator,” “Thelma & Louise”), opens in theaters nationwide October 15, 2021.

The historical epic is a cinematic and thought-provoking drama set in the midst of the Hundred Years War that explores the ubiquitous power of men, the frailty of justice and the strength and courage of one woman willing to stand alone in the service of truth. Based on actual events, the film unravels long-held assumptions about France’s last sanctioned duel between Jean de Carrouges and Jacques Le Gris, two friends turned bitter rivals. Carrouges is a respected knight known for his bravery and skill on the battlefield. Le Gris is a Norman squire whose intelligence and eloquence make him one of the most admired nobles in court. When Carrouges’ wife, Marguerite, is viciously assaulted by Le Gris, a charge he denies, she refuses to stay silent, stepping forward to accuse her attacker, an act of bravery and defiance that puts her life in jeopardy. The ensuing trial by combat, a grueling duel to the death, places the fate of all three in God’s hands.

Oscar® winner Matt Damon (“Good Will Hunting,” “Ford v Ferrari”) is Jean de Carrouges, two-time Academy Award® nominee Adam Driver (“Marriage Story,” “BlacKkKlansman”) is Jacques Le Gris, Emmy® winner Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve,” “Free Guy”) is Marguerite de Carrouges and two-time Oscar winner Ben Affleck (“Argo,” “Good Will Hunting”) is Count Pierre d’Alençon. The screenplay is by Oscar nominee Nicole Holofcener (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”) & Ben Affleck & Matt Damon based on the book by Eric Jager.

The film is produced by Ridley Scott, Kevin J. Walsh (“Manchester by the Sea”), Jennifer Fox (“Nightcrawler”), Nicole Holofcener, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck with Kevin Halloran (“Ford v Ferrari”), Drew Vinton (“Promised Land”), Madison Ainley (“Justice League”) serving as executive producers. “The Last Duel” is based on Eric Jager’s book The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal, and Trial by Combat in Medieval France, which brings the turbulent Middle Ages to life in striking detail. When etiquette, social aspirations and justice were driven by the codes of chivalry, the consequences for defying the institutions of the time – the Church, the nobility at court, a teenage king – could be severe. For a woman navigating these violent times, one who had no legal standing without the support of her husband, the stakes were even higher. The Last Duel opens in U.S. theaters October 15, 2021.

THE EMMY-WINNING SPECIAL VISUAL EFFECTS OF THE MANDALORIAN: SEASON 2

Join Visual Effects Supervisor, Richard Bluff, as he shares a peek behind the curtain of the effects of The Mandalorian: Season 2, winner of 7 Emmy® Awards including Special Visual Effects, Sound Mixing, Cinematography, Prosthetic Makeup, Stunt Coordination, Stunt Performance, and Music Composition.

For its sophomore outing, Lucasfilm’s hit Disney+ series built upon the groundbreaking technical and artistic achievements accomplished during season one, combining traditional methodologies, with ever-advancing new technologies. The team also increased the physical size of the ILM StageCraft LED Volume which would again be used for over half of all scenes. This season also marked the debut of ILM’s state-of-the-art real-time cinema render engine called, Helios. The high-resolution, high-fidelity engine was used for all final pixel rendering displayed on the LED screens and offers unmatched performance for the types of complex scenes prevalent in today’s episodic and feature film production.

Practical creature effects have been a vital part of the aesthetic and charm of the Star Wars universe since 1977, and for season two, the effects team realized over 100 puppeteered creatures, droids, and animatronic masks, which included the beloved Tatooine Bantha, realized as a ten foot-high puppeteered rideable creature.

Practical miniatures and motion control photography were used once again for scale model ships, as well as miniature set extensions built for use in ILM’s StageCraft LED volume. Stop motion animation was also utilized for the Scrap Walker at the Karthon Chop Fields. The greater krayt dragon on Tatooine was realized as a six-hundred-foot computer-generated creature that would swim shark-like through the sand environment by way of a liquefaction effect, wherein the sand would behave like water.

We would like to acknowledge the care and dedication that the team here at ILM put into the show, along with our partners at Legacy Effects, Hybride, Image Engine, Important Looking Pirates, Ghost VFX, Lola, Stereo D, Tippett Studios, Base FX, Raynault, Virtuous, and Yannix.

We hope you enjoy this look inside The Mandalorian: Season 2.

Troja, Portugal: Sony and THU launch the second edition of Sony Talent League

After the success of last year’s edition, Sony Group Corporation (Sony) and THU have joined forces once again to launch a global challenge that supports young creators worldwide and to discover the next generation of creative minds in the digital entertainment industry. Last year, we received 1638 total submissions from 105 countries.
Sony Talent League by THU is looking for submissions that mix different creative fields, such as animation, film, games, VR, digital photography, music, multi-media, and so on. The aim of the challenge is to inspire young creators to go beyond their creative comfort zones, overcome their insecurities and stop doubting their talent.

The second edition of Sony Talent League by THU was launched on September 21, at the THU Main Event 2021, held in Tróia, Portugal. Creators aged between 18 and 35 can participate in the challenge by submitting their ideas from October 8 until November 14, either individually or in a group of up to four team members. This year, collaboration will be reinforced through a team matching initiative which will connect creators to help them find partners to develop projects together as a team. The three finalists will be empowered to get their ideas off the ground through ten weeks of mentorships with renowned creators and industry legends, and a funding of up to 10.000€ per submission. Furthermore, the winning team will be awarded a full-ride to THU’s next event (entry ticket, travel, accommodation, and food).

The jury and mentor panel includes Shuzo John Shiota, President & CEO of Polygon Pictures; Shuhei Yoshida, Head of Indies Initiative for Sony Interactive Entertainment; Sally Slade, Lead Engineer at Magnopus; David Prescott, SVP Creative Production; Kara Oropallo, Animation Production Manager, Consultant and Trainer; Scot Stafford, Composer, Sound Supervisor, and Director; Kevin Young, Head of Creative Technology at The Mills’ London Studio; and Saraswathi Balgam, Writer, Director, and Creative Producer, with more to be announced.

“Creators spend so much time wondering if they’re good enough, that sometimes they can miss out on incredible opportunities that could boost their creative journey. That’s why Sony Talent League is so important: to empower creators and help them realize that their talent and their voice matters. ” says André Luis, THU’s founder. ” THU and Sony share this same mission, and we strongly believe that the key to growth and success is to bring something meaningful to the community of talent”, André adds. Last year’s winner, creative director Dilruba Tayfun, and members of her team: assistant creative director Ruben de Haas, and UX designer & researcher Marie-Claire Springham, created “Togather”, a platform that allows anyone to make and share custom digital brushes inspired by real-life objects. „Ask yourself what exactly it is that makes you think it isn’t for you. Is it the deadlines? The words used in the challenge? Thinking your idea is not good enough? You just
might be looking for an excuse not to take that shot. If the first thing that comes to your mind is this isn’t for me, it might be worth thinking what can I take away from applying to this?“, advice from Dilruba Tayfun.
