Magic Bench

Mixed Reality (MR) and Augmented Reality (AR) create exciting opportunities to engage users in immersive experiences, resulting in natural human-computer interaction. Many MR interactions are generated around a €first-person Point of View (POV). In these cases, the user directs to the environment, which is digitally displayed either through a head-mounted display or a handheld computing device. One drawback of such conventional AR/MR platforms is that the experience is user-speci€fic. Moreover, these platforms require the user to wear and/or hold an expensive device, which can be cumbersome and alter interaction techniques.
We create a solution for multi-user interactions in AR/MR, where a group can share the same augmented environment with any computer generated (CG) asset and interact in a shared story sequence through a third-person POV. Our approach is to instrument the environment leaving the user unburdened of any equipment, creating a seamless walk-up-and-play experience. We demonstrate this technology in a series of vignettes featuring humanoid animals. Participants can not only see and hear these characters, they can also feel them on the bench through haptic feedback. Many of the characters also interact with users directly, either through speech or touch. In one vignette an elephant hands a participant a glowing orb. ThŒis demonstrates HCI in its simplest form: a person walks up to a computer, and the computer hands the person an object.

Ottawa Animation Film Festival OIAF: THE OFFICIAL COMPETITION IS ANNOUNCED

After watching over 1,900 entries from around the world, the OIAF selection committee has chosen 92 films to be screening the 2017 Official Competition.

There is a definite air of defiance, not just in terms of content, but also through stylistic choices and a rejection of conventional narrative storytelling in this year’s selections.  Current attitudes about the political and social environments of 2017 are very much reflected in this year’s OIAF selections. Leading the punk pack is The Story of O.J., a beautifully animated and brutally honest music video about race relations in America co-directed by Mark Romanek and JAY-Z.  It was designed and animated by The Mill and Titmouse. Another highlight is Clyde Petersen’s feature Torrey Pines, a queer,raw coming of age story. 

This year, there are two features in the Official Competition by the same director. This unprecedented feat was achieved by Japanese filmmaker Masaaki Yuasa, the well-known director of many anime films included the widely acclaimed Mind Game (2004). He currently has a new series in development for Netflix. 

Canadian highlights for the year include a slew of work from the National Film Board including new work by Matthew Rankin, Chintis Lundgren and Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowsk plus Eva Cvijanovic.

Other Canadian animation highlights include Amanda Strong’s bold stop-motion film Four Faces of the Moon which fuses Canada’s colonial past with Strong’s own family story, .  Vladimir Kanic’s Only Lovers Leave to Die and OIAF 17 poster designer Elise Simard’s Beautiful Like Elsewhere, create mesmerizing non-linear experiences that are hauntingly poetic, and achingly beautiful.

Mit hochkarätigen Referenten und einem vielfältigen Themenmix lockt der diesjährige gamescom congress am 23. August 2017 nach Köln. Die Veranstaltung wird erstmalig mit einer Wahlkampf-Arena eröffnet. Es treten an: Dr. Peter Tauber (CDU), Hubertus Heil (SPD), Matthias Höhn (Die Linke), Michael Kellner (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) und Nicola Beer (FDP). Die Top-Wahlkämpfer nehmen Stellung zur Relevanz von Spielen und den Herausforderungen in der Digitalpolitik des Landes. Anschließend referieren über 70 Speaker aus dem In- und Ausland in Keynotes, Talks und Panels zu den fünf Dachthemen Wissen, Business, Gamification, Recht und Leben. Der gamescom congress ist Europas führende Konferenz für Trends und die Potenziale von Computerspielen weit über die Games-Branche hinaus und die erste Adresse für Wirtschaftsvertreter aller Branchen, Kulturschaffende, Pädagogen, Politiker und Wissenschaftler. Unter dem diesjährigen Kongress-Motto „Mehr als Spiele“ referieren unter anderem Cornelia Holsten von der Kommission für Jugendmedienschutz (KJM), Henriette Löwisch von der Deutschen Journalistenschule (DJS), der russische Schriftsteller Dmitry Glukhovsky (Metro-Reihe), Dr. Torsten Wingenter (Lufthansa), Gustav Käll (Universal Music), Gregor Gründgens (Vodafone), Alexander Knetig (ARTE), Dr. Tobias Schmid von der Landesanstalt für Medien Nordrhein-Westfalen (LfM), Thomas Jarzombek MdB (CDU/CSU Fraktion), Heike Raab (Landesvertretung Rheinland-Pfalz) und Rachelle Vallon von der New Yorker Schule Quest to Learn.

So vielfältig die Referenten sind, so spannend und aktuell ist auch das Themenspektrum, das sich auf die fünf Dachthemen „Mehr als Wissen: Games bilden“, „Mehr als Business: Games lohnen“, „Mehr als Gamification: Games verwandeln“, „Mehr als Recht: Games fundieren“ und „Mehr als Leben: Games faszinieren“ verteilt. So bieten die Panels, Talks und Diskussionsrunden über die Integration von Games in Schulen bis hin zum Artenschutz, wie Edward Partridge vom WWF berichtet, ausreichend Impulse, die weit über die Computerspiel-Branche hinausgehen. Auf einer zusätzlichen „Open Stage“ erwarten die Teilnehmer weitere spannende Vorträge – von Games und Infotainment beim TV-Sender Arte bis zu Entwicklungen der Gamesbranche in Kanada.

We are hiring riggers and one lead rigger to complete our team.

The ideal candidate should:

– have experience in cartoon characters rigging

– be able to adapt to a specific workflow and naming conventions

– be able to adapt the level of complexity of the rigs to the time limits

– create animator’s friendly rigs

– speak En

glish and/or French

The magic world of the ancient forest, incredible adventures and fantastic heroes that will soon be discovered by the whole world! Mavka – a soul of the Forest, she is nature herself, she is complex, mysterious and two-folded: tender and caring when in love, but fierce and defensive when hurt. Nevertheless, her main feature is that she always strives for peace and harmony. This is the story about the magical power of love.

Since time immemorial, the vast Ukrainian forests have harbored countless secrets and unfathomable mysteries. They are home to wondrous mythical creatures dwelling among ancient trees, faithfully guarding their sacred realm. Mavka is a soul of the Forest. Her primary mission is to protect the Forest and its sacrosanct Heart – the source of life itself – against any aggression or intrusion, including on the part of humans. Lukash is an unassuming farm boy, who has a great love of music and pours his talent into playing the flute. It is largely thanks to Lukash’s music that a miracle takes place: Mavka and Lukash meet and fall in love. From the start, their union is pitted against formidable odds, but the obstacles loom even larger once the avaricious Evilyn arrives on the scene and sets about building a sawmill at the edge of the Forest. This serves as a façade to mask her true purpose: to get a hold of the Heart of the Forest – the key to which is Mavka herself, who is already rendered vulnerable by her blossoming feelings for Lukash. To get to Mavka, Evilyn wields Lukash as her weapon, and strikes anger and fear into the hearts of the villagers. Will Mavka and Lukash be able to defend their feelings for each other? Will Mavka be able to save the forest and protect her love? Will each of the two young lovers from different worlds make the right choice?

“Mavka. The Forest Song” is a full-length animated feature produced by Ukraine-based Animagrad (FILM.UA Group). It is currently at the stage of development. The film is inspired by a classical Ukrainian poem play by Lesya Ukrainka, as well as Ukrainian authentic mythology and legends. Mavka, the Forest princess — powerful female character with unique appearance and universal appeal, and has potential to be ranked with internationally celebrated personages. The heroes and themes elaborated in the story will appeal to adults and children worldwide, but its distinct Slavic spirit and authentic charm will set it apart from anything else in the genre.
