Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory is being whipped up for a 2027 release — and this time the animated feature will serve up a delicious twist on everything you thought you knew about the world of Wonka.
In this bold adventure set in modern-day London, Emmy-winner Kit Connor (Warfare, Rocketman, Heartstopper) voices Charlie Paley, a brand-new character stepping into the spotlight, while Oscar-winner Taika Waititi (Klara and the Sun, Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Love and Thunder) lends his voice to the legendary confectioner himself.
Connor says, “I’m so excited to enter the wonderful world of Wonka. I was immediately caught by the early concept art and the directors’ vision for the film — capturing the spirit and heart that made the original story so special, whilst imbuing it with something so fresh and unique. It’s such a fun representation of the London that I know. This new adventure is going to surprise audiences around the world. You’re in for a treat!”
Willy Wonka (Waititi) has spent the years since the Golden Ticket contest behind bars (not the chocolate kind) for the crime of turning a child into a blueberry. Having served his time, Wonka returns to his factory determined to add a little sweetness to a bitter world. But one thing stands in his way: teenager Charlie Paley (Connor) and his friends. Facing eviction, this next generation of “rotten” kids plot to break into the factory, nab a priceless Wonka Bar, and save their homes. But like many before them who enter the fantastical world of the factory, these kids are in for a bit more than they can chew…
Directed by Jared Stern (The LEGO Batman Movie, Green Eggs and Ham) and Elaine Bogan (Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia, Spirit Untamed), the film promises an imaginative new take on the beloved universe, powered by the animation artistry of Sony Pictures Imageworks, the studio behind Oscar-winners Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and KPop Demon Hunters.” Academy-Award winner Aron Warner (Shrek) and Timothy Yoo (Back to the Outback, Green Eggs and Ham) are producing, and Waititi is an executive producer.
“Our directors, Jared and Elaine, have a bold vision befitting this new adventure whilst remaining sympathetic to the legacy, and I’m thrilled to play my part in bringing Willy Wonka to life in animated form,” Waititi says. “He is so special to me, and the opportunity to voice such an iconic, eccentric candy genius — if a little mischievous at times — is hugely exciting.”
Expect original songs, new characters, and even a few familiar faces, all wrapped in the signature British charm of Roald Dahl’s iconic world. “Having been raised on the delightfully twisted world of Willy Wonka, it’s a privilege to bring his continued adventures to life as twisted adults,” Stern and Bogan say. “And how sweet to do it like never before via the magic of animation, creating a Charlie vs. The Chocolate Factory that’s more deliciously unhinged than your wildest imagination. If we do a rotten job, you can throw us down a rubbish chute!“
Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory marks the latest expansion of the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory universe, following Netflix’s acquisition of the Roald Dahl Story Company in 2021. The reality competition The Golden Ticket will air later in 2026.
“With their singular comedic and visual flair, Jared and Elaine have concocted a delightful adventure that remains true to the spirit of Dahl’s beloved novel while imagining a brand new story that introduces this world to a new generation,” says Hannah Minghella, Head of Feature Animation and Family Film at Netflix Animation Studios. “We can’t wait for audiences around the world to experience the magic and mayhem for themselves when the film comes out next year.”
Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory will stream in 2027, only on Netflix.

Is this a sensitive cut or does this change the expectations of the potential audience by omitting the moment that defines the characters?
I could not help noticing, that there is a significant difference between the US trailer and the european trailer, or better let´s say between the european trailer and the trailer released in the rest of the world.
The european trailer has been censored, cut, shortened right in the beginning when Jo is taking out her knife and flips it open, holding it in front of Raissa´s face.
This is taken out of the trailer in the european version, while it remained in all the other trailers I found all over the net.
Why is that and does that mean the cut will also be in the final movie here in Europe?
Normally I would not mind, because there are perhaps good arguments not to show a kid whirling a knife. But here, in this case and in my humble opinion the cut damages the trailer because this is essential to the tone of the film and especially to the character design of both protagonists. Jo is wild and Raissa is fearless, together they will be a great team.
So in taking this out, the Europeans will have greater difficulties to understand and to connect to those two characters.
And while some may say, the knife scene is too threatening, I would argue that in the following montage, where both kids create their memories together, there is more wild, dangerous stuff happening then showing off with a knife. Especially when the teens are driving a bus being chased by the police….
So, I like the US trailer more then the european one. What do you think?
The international Trailer – uncut – with a whirling knife:
The european trailer – sensitively cut – without a whirling knife:

The 2026 Official Selection
Short Films selection – Official
There are as many techniques as there are themes: puppets in mourning, drawings seeking emancipation, childhoods marked by war or loss… Yet hope reigns supreme, manifesting through characters who yearn for love and a more just world. The Official selection places its spotlight on the latest gems from established filmmakers but also from emerging talents, providing an exclusive glimpse into the realm of animation, its techniques and its messages.
In a selection of predominantly animal-themed storylines, between microcosm and macrocosm, endearing characters embark on extraordinary journeys from the sea to outer space. The viewer follows the explorations and wanderings of these tiny beings with big ambitions, as they search for their place in this vast world.
The Off-Limits programme pushes the boundaries of visual and technical experimentation. Using movement, texture and rhythm, the works take the audience on a multi-sensory journey to the outer limits of the medium.
Through its multiple points of view and diverse techniques, the Perspectives section invites us to question our own worldview. The films encapsulate the inherent contradictions of contemporary societies and the constant interplay between intimate and universal themes.

Some of these figures will become friends, some foes. Joined by well-meaning-but- hapless weredog Raww (Dave Franco) and a small-but-mighty pack of pals, Jo and Raissa must face The Dreaded Manananggal (Tony winning icon Lea Salonga), the most feared creature on the island.
Zum hochkarätigen Sprecherensemble von DREAMWORKS DIE VERGESSENE INSEL gehören außerdem die Emmy nominierte Jenny Slate (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Dying for Sex), Manny Jacinto (The Good Place, Top Gun: Maverick), die BAFTA nominierte Dolly de Leon (Triangle of Sadness, Ghostlight), Comedy Superstar Jo Koy (Haunted Mansion, Jo Koy: Live from Brooklyn) sowie der Emmy Preisträger Ronny Chieng (The Daily Show, M3GAN).
Update: Solid sources told me the following Information:
SPE shared its intent to wind down the Pixomondo ‘umbrella‘, and integrate some of its capabilities into other areas of Sony.
As part of this…
The R&D/Innovation component of the business would be absorbed by Sony Group’s R&D operation.
PXO’s VFX operations would close after the completion of any outstanding projects or contracts…SPE is streamlining VFX efforts internally to focus on its Imageworks capabilities.
Clara operations would begin to wind down as well, with potential for some business initiatives associated with Sony Group to be transferred over.
All outstanding contracts will be fulfilled.
Plans are very much still in development and subject to legal and regulatory process.
