As the drones are approaching the base, they are hijacked by cloned Kaiju brains that were planted inside causing the drones to attack the base resulting in heavy casualties. Newt (Charlie Day) and Dr. Hermann Gottlieb (Burn Gorman) attempt to stop the drones, however, Newt reveals he’s behind the drone attack and plans to end the world. But Liwen Shao (Jing Tian) is able to shut down the drones and save Jake Pentecost (John Boyega), Nathan Lambert (Scott Eastwood), and many others.

The award-winning animated short film The Flying Sailor is available on The New Yorker’s digital channels today, November 18, as part of the magazine’s award-winning Screening Room series. A National Film Board of Canada (NFB) production, the film is the latest work by the Oscar-nominated and Palme d’Or-winning duo of Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby. Inspired by the incredible true-life story of a man blown two kilometres through the air by the 1917 Halifax Explosion—the largest accidental non-nuclear explosion in history—The Flying Sailor is an exhilarating meditation on the wonder and fragility of being.
Forbis and Tilby are Calgary-based animators who have shared Best Animated Short Film Academy Award nominations for When the Day Breaks (1999) and Wild Life (2011), with Tilby also nominated individually for Strings (1991). The NFB has a long and distinguished history at the Oscars, with NFB productions and co-productions garnering more Academy Award nominations than any other film organization based outside of Hollywood.
The Flying Sailor debuts on The New Yorker’s digital channels after a world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France, a North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and a U.S. festival premiere at the New York City Short Film Festival, where it received the award for Best Animation.

VAMOS Animation ist ein unabhängiges Animationsstudio mit Sitz in Köln – ein Kollektiv von Künstler*innen, die an der Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln mit Schwerpunkt Animation studiert und 2016 im Rahmen eines Stipendiums des Mediengründerzentrums NRW (MGZ) ihre Firma VAMOS gegründet haben. VAMOS hat sich auf Animationen für Kurzfilme, Dokumentarfilme und Installationen spezialisiert und interessiert sich neben der klassischen Animation vor allem für neue Formate und Anwendungsfelder im Bereich Animation. Die verschiedenen Nationalitäten und kulturellen Hintergründe der Mitglieder des Kollektivs ermöglichen es ihnen, einen multi- kulturellen Ansatz für ihre Themen und Projekte anzubieten, mit dem sie Erfolge auf internationalen Festivals und Ausstellungen sammeln.
Camilo Colmenares machte 2004 sein Diplom an der Film- und Fernsehschule der Universidad Nacional de Colombia und gründete anschließend mit einer Gruppe audiovisueller Künstler* innen das Laboratorio Kinoclaje. Von 2010 bis 2014 studierte er als Postgraduierter an der Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln. Sein Abschlussfilm Quimtai wurde beim Kölner Design Preis 2015 ausgezeichnet.
Sae Yun Jung studierte Fotografie am Seoul Institute of the Arts von 2007 bis 2009. Im Anschluss tätig als Fotograf beim Studio für Modefotografie Mok Na Jung in Seoul. Von 2011 bis 2016 Studium an der KHM mit Schwerpunkt Animation. Sein Abschlussfilm The Wave wurde beim Festival Dok-Leipzig 2018 uraufgeführt und im WDR Fernsehen ausgestrahlt.
Diana Menestrey schloss 2009 ihr Studium der Bildenden Künste an der Universidad Nacional de Colombia ab. 2010 kam sie für das Studium an der Kunsthochschule für Medien nach Köln und absolvierte es mit dem Dokumentarfilm OWAMI – I am. 2015 erhielt sie den Spiridon-Neven-DuMont-Preis.
Igor Shin Moromisato schloss sein Studium der Bildenden Künste an der Universidade Estadual Paulista, São Paulo im Jahre 2009 ab und erhielt ein Austausch-Stipendium in Okinawa (Japan), um dort traditionelle japanische Drucktechnik zu erlernen. Von 2010 bis 2015 Studium an der Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln mit Schwerpunkt Animation. Sein Animationsfilm Cachorro Loko wurde 2015 von diversen nationalen und internationalen Festivals ausgewählt und erhielt den Förderpreis des NRW-Wettbewerbs der Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen 2015.
