Will Linda be able to find her perfect match? – Support this Kickstarter Project by Sofia Tonin

Director Sofia Tonin wrote:

„Hello! 😀

My name is Sofia Tonin, I’m a student at Ringling College of Art and Design in my final year of earning a BFA in Computer Animation.

I’m super excited to finally start sharing updates on my thesis film „Praying For Love“ that I have been working on for over a year now! 🍃 This 3d animated short film is about Linda, a female praying mantis looking for love, who hits a snag when she keeps accidentally eating all her boyfriends… Will she be able to find her true love without her cannibalistic tendencies getting in the way? If you’re interested check out the link to the kickstarter below and keep an eye out for more updates coming soon!“

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/prayingforlove/praying-for-love-3d-animated-short-film#

„This film, while darkly humorous and a bit unhinged, also carries a very personal underlying message. It can be hard growing up and never quite feeling right about any relationship you get into. Not being able to reconcile a base instinct with the gender and relationships norms you’ve grown up with all you life; the ones you’ve come to accept as the path to happiness. Praying For Love aims to encapsulate the feeling of following the „rule book of dating“ to the T and still finding yourself wholly underwhelmed and confused– and then finally breaking out of the cycle and realizing love and happiness don’t subscribe to any rule book other than your own. 🙂

I am nearing the end of production on my film and will be completing it in April of 2025. Before that deadline I am looking to raise the funds for some past and upcoming expenses, including the music, sound design, film festival fees and Kickstarter fees.

Any amount donated would be a huge help, but so is resharing online and with friends and family! Thank you for checking out my project, I can’t wait to share the final film!“

On Animation Studio deceased on February 25th, 2025

Here is their own obituary:

###################################################

Amid the changes in our industry, ON Animation Studios is ceasing its activities.
It is sad to say goodbye to a team as incredible, talented, and skilled as ours. We will deeply miss the joy and excitement of creating outstanding films alongside such remarkable people and partners.

We are grateful to have had the opportunity to do what we love for so many years while remaining true to ourselves. The way we shared, learned, and grew together, and the respect and care we showed one another, were as essential as the stories we told and the values they embodied.
This is our commitment to a brighter future—not only for the children who cherish our films but for everyone who works in this extraordinary industry, along with their loved ones who have shared in this journey.

Though we cannot name each person who played a vital role in making this adventure possible, you know who you are, and for that, we thank you from the heart.

We leave behind a testament to our work and the promise that we still want to do more.

Keep on keeping on

Mark Flanagan: ARTIST (Allied Response To Industry Setbacks & Transformation)

LINK TO SIGN UP

(And no it’s not just for artists, it’s for everyone involved… I just couldn’t find a better acronym)

These are really difficult times globally for a lot of folks in VFX/Animation/Games.

It’s not just headlines; it’s our colleagues, our friends, our industry who are losing their jobs, sometimes after decades of dedication to their studios..

We can’t just stand by and watch it happen. We need to act.

That’s why I’m pulling together a roundtable in early April.

Think of it as a huddle – a space for organisations like SIGGRAPH, IGDA, VES, and anyone else with a stake/opinion/idea to share how we address the critical moment.

  • Real, actionable support: Not just talk, but pushing for industry-wide initiatives that actually help people.
  • Connecting the dots: Creating spaces for networking and retraining – getting those affected back on their feet.
  • Building a stronger foundation: Learning from this crisis to make our industry more resilient, so we don’t end up here again.

If you’re part of an organization that can make a difference, or if you’ve been hit by these layoffs, your voice matters. We need you in this conversation.

Stuttgart, FMX 2025 The program is online! AI magic and the art of non-verbal animation

Stuttgart/Germany, March 12, 2025. Press Release

Less than two months to go until FMX 2025, the program is now online. It contains the large variety of topics the conference stands for and adresses the latest and hottest in VFX, animation and digital media production.

Along with the program, we have also published the lists of speakers and companies, who thanks to their expertise breathe content and life into FMX 2025.

Artificial Intelligence has a decidedly positive spin as a helpful tool in the presentation on Robert Zemeckis‘ „Here“. Sessions on the animation and sound in the Academy Award winning feature“ Flow“ focus on the non-verbal communication among the animal cast.

AI-Driven De-Aging in „Here“

Join Production Supervisor Kevin Baillie and Metaphysic VFX Supervisor Jo Plaete for an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at how artist-empowering AI transformed Robert Zemeckis’s film „Here“. This session explores how AI-enabled de-aging technology preserved the performances of Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Paul Bettany, and Kelly Reilly, seamlessly spanning decades.

Baillie and Plaete will break down the real-time face-swapping system that allowed actors and directors to see de-aged performances instantly on set, enabling them to truly interact with the VFX process, as well as the AI-driven post-production techniques that allowed Zemeckis to leap over the “uncanny valley.” They will also discuss AI’s broader impact on digital environments, body reconstruction, and enhancing prosthetics for aged characters.

Attendees will gain insights into how AI, when combined with human creativity, can accelerate workflows, expand storytelling possibilities, and redefine VFX pipelines. This presentation will showcase „Here“ as a landmark case study in artist-empowering AI, pushing the boundaries of modern filmmaking.

This session is part of the VFX FOR FEATURES track.

Non-verbal Communication in „Flow“

A devastating deluge hits the world in „Flow“, the Academy Award-winning animated feature of 2025. A cat, a dog and a capybara team up with a secretarybird and a ring-tailed lemur to find a safe place to survive the disaster.

Latvian Director Gints Zilbalodis hat stated, that he wanted the audience to feel immersed in the story, to be close to the characters and live their experiences. Since the animals don’t talk, non-verbal communication plays a decisive role: body language and the animals‘ natural sounds.

In his FMX presentation Animation Supervisor Thibaut Delahaye will let the FMX audience in on how he approached his part of the feat, especially focussing on animating quadrupeds.

This session is part of the FEATURE ANIMATION track.

Sound Designer Gurwal Loïc Dallas is going to elaborate on how sound can convey emotions and help to immerse the viewers in a film without dialogue.

This session is part of the SOUND DESIGN track.

Watch Your Language!

Since the early days of VFX, our vocabulary has defined our role in the pecking order of the filmmaking process: we’re vendors, we supervise, we work as artists, we comp CGI. What seems normal to us has an effect on the outside world and how the audience values our contribution to the stories we tell.

Florian Gellinger, Co-Founder and Executive Producer, RISE | Visual Effects Studios, looks at the history of our vocabulary and compares it to other industries. How are these industries perceived in the public compared to what we do? How are the companies in our industry marketing themselves? How do other industries define the language in conjunction to their tools or services?

Let’s face it: We’re horrible at marketing what we do, and the way we talk about our work is a masterclass in self-devaluation.

This session is part of the MANAGING CHANGE track.

Encore | Free online event: ‚Beyond the Limits- AI Uses that are Off the Table‘, on Thursday, April 17th 2025

We are delighted to invite you to our free online event called ‚Beyond the Limits- AI Uses that are Off the Table‘, on Thursday, April 17th 2025, from 10.00-11.00 CEST. 🕙 📅

🗣️ During this event, Deniz Iren, PhD, PMP, Associate Professor of Affective Computing at Open Universiteit, Netherlands, will delve into the implications of the EU AI Act, which has been in effect since August 2024. With over 20 years of experience at the intersection of academia and industry, he will provide insights into how the Act is shaping AI development in Europe.

📢 A key focus of the AI Act is its strict bans on emotion recognition in workplaces and education, with limited exceptions for safety and health purposes. However, its rushed drafting process left significant gaps, leading to the recent AI Office’s February 2025 guidelines, which clarify—and in some cases tighten—these rules. These guidelines outline AI practices deemed unacceptable due to their risks to European values and fundamental rights. They also address prohibited and high-risk AI applications, such as harmful manipulation, social scoring, and real-time remote biometric identification.

What do these changes mean for AI research, startups, and innovation? How will they impact HR tech, edtech, and global AI competitiveness? Most importantly, what are the specific implications for educators and researchers navigating this evolving regulatory landscape?

Join us for an insightful talk and Q&A to explore these pressing questions!

Who should join?
Anyone interested in the topic, Educators and Researchers, Edtech & HR Tech Developers, AI Startups, who want to stay ahead of EU AI regulations and their impact on innovation & academia.

Klaudija Cermak: „It is now abundantly clear that we need a VFX Trade Body and a VFX Union to shape the industry and protect the industry from future shocks.“

There is a huge realignment happening in the VFX industry in front of our eyes. 😳

All these wonderful and legendary Soho companies have operated on the narrowest of profit margins for decades as Hollywood studios and Streamers took advantage of the incredibly passionate VFX talent that worked on unpaid overtime to deliver massively profitable VFX films to them. The profits were never shared with VFX houses and most of the time current film in VFX companies was paying for the previous one as Studios asked for dozens of iterations for FREE.
While we are all in a shock there is a lot of happening behind the scenes, new companies are being formed in London and a lot of people have jobs already. Other VFX facilities and organisations are reaching out to artists as
the VFX industry is like a family. ❤️

However, it is now abundantly clear that we need a VFX Trade Body and a VFX Union to shape the industry and protect the industry from future shocks.
