The European Animation Awards Association was founded in 2017 by renowned animation professionals to celebrate the art of animation.
In 2023, the Association was revived, and the third edition of The Emile Awards Ceremony is held on Monday, 23 September 2024, at the historic Apollon Municipal Theatre of Hermoupolis, Syros Island, Greece in the framework of ANIMASYROS International Animation Festival.
We spoke with the president of the European Animation Awards Association, Vassilis C. Karamitsanis about the revival and the things to come! Enjoy the Conversation!

Der Deutsche Filmpreis, die goldene Lola 2024 für Best VFX geht an Kariem Saleh und Adrian Meyer für ihre Arbeit als VFX Supervisors am Film „Die Theorie von Allem“
Der Deutsche Filmpreis – die renommierteste und höchstdotierte Auszeichnung für den deutschen Film – ist mit Preisgeldern der Beauftragten der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien in einer Gesamthöhe von knapp 3 Mio. Euro dotiert und wird nach der Wahl durch die Mitglieder der Deutschen Filmakademie von Kulturstaatsministerin Claudia Roth verliehen. Die Verleihung ist eine Veranstaltung der Deutschen Filmakademie in Zusammenarbeit mit der Beauftragten der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien (BKM), produziert von der Deutschen Filmakademie Produktion GmbH.
Apple TV+ kündigt den ersten Teil der animierten Abenteuertrilogie „WondLa“ an, die von Skydance Animation stammt und auf der New York Times-Bestsellerreihe „Die Suche nach WondLa“ von Tony DiTerlizzi basiert. Bei der Serie mit hochkarätigem Voice-Cast fungiert Bobs Gannaway als Showrunner und Executive Producer. Die erste Staffel umfasst sieben Episoden und startet am Freitag, 28. Juni weltweit auf Apple TV+.
In „WondLa“ lebt Eva, gesprochen von Jeanine Mason („Roswell, New Mexico“), in einem hochmodernen unterirdischen Bunker. Das neugierige, enthusiastische und temperamentvolle Mädchen im Teenageralter wird von dem Roboter Muthr aufgezogen, gesprochen von der Emmy-Nominierten Teri Hatcher („Desperate Housewives“). Am 16. April trafen sich die nominierten VFX Supervisors zu einem INDAC Gespräch via Zoom über ihre Arbeit und den Stand der Dinge in der VFX Arbeit (zwei fehlten entschuldigt,weil auf arbeitsamen Auslandsdreh!)

The Academy Award® nominated ILLOGIC STUDIOS has released an exclusive early look at their first feature project SCAVENGERS, a CG animated feature following the journey of a lazy rat and a resourceful frog trying to maintain their luxurious lifestyle and paradise : a gigantic city made of trash. The film aims to take a deep dive into the consumer culture obsession, a satire of the modern society full of comfort and consumption.
SCAVENGERS was unveiled for the first time at the 2023 Annecy Film Festival, where it was selected at the MIFA pitch session with major distributors and producing companies. The film is under development and the studio is still looking for partners.
ILLOGIC associates Victor Caire, Théophile Dufresne, Gabriel Grapperon, Lucas Navarro, describe SCAVENGERS as an exciting feature project with an adult tone and a dark and cinematic art direction:
“ We want to give this project a wacky and quirky touch. Each of the human objects present in the environment is used by the animals in a surprising and inventive way. The challenge is to bring poetry and a surprising look to these discarded items. It is a challenge which, if successful, has the potential to create a singular world. ”
Illogic is a collective of French directors founded in 2016 following the production of their Oscar® nominated short film, GARDEN PARTY. They have since produced numerous projects, often featuring animals in a humorous and realistic animation style. In 2018, they opened their company Illogic Studios in Montpellier, France, which has distinguished itself in the production of advertisements, the development of animated features and series.
A lion who would change our lives forever. #Mufasa: The Lion King, in theaters December 20. “Mufasa: The Lion King” enlists Rafiki to relay the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick.
Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka—the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny—their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe.

Dezember 2024 in den deutschen Kinos startet! Der neue Film erzählt den unvorhergesehen Aufstieg Mufasas zum geliebten König des Geweihten Lands. Die Lieder des Films stammen aus der Feder des preisgekrönten Songwriters Lin-Manuel Miranda, produziert wurden diese von Mark Mancina und Miranda, weitere Musik steuert Lebo M bei.

Simbas und Nalas kleine Löwentochter Kiara erfährt Mufasas Geschichte von Rafiki, dem Erzähler von MUFASA: DER KÖNIG DER LÖWEN. An Rafikis Seite sind natürlich Timon und Pumbaa, mit ihrer unverwechselbaren Art. Die Geschichte wird in Rückblicken erzählt und beginnt bei Mufasa als verwaistem Löwenjungen, der verloren und alleine ist, bis er Taka, den Thronfolger der Löwen, kennenlernt. Diese zufällige Begegnung ist der Start einer langen Reise, auf die sich eine außergewöhnliche Gruppe von Außenseitern begeben wird, die auf der Suche nach ihrer Bestimmung sind. Ihre Verbundenheit wird dabei auf die Probe gestellt, als die Freunde einem bedrohlichen und tödlichen Feind entkommen müssen.

Francis had always been stubborn about not installing a fence around the field. He believed it would interfere with his freedom. As a result, whenever Jeanine wanted to play a match, they had to play on their respective sides of the net and against the wall. Because he was tired of constantly fetching balls from the sea below and losing to Jeanine, who happened to be much stronger than him. And so he always ended up playing by himself. After spending an hour sweeping the yard (which included a 45-minute chat with the neighbor over the hedge), Francis suddenly heard Jeanine running up the stairs, shouting, „He’s here!“ It turned out their son had returned home for a short visit. He had been working on the opposite side of the Mediterranean and it was a crisis for everyone except the pirates. Therefore, seeing the seaplane about to ruin his afternoon’s work, Francis felt a twinge of anger. Yet, he found joy in the presence of his son, making everything else irrelevant.
The interactive bedtime story THE BEAR – A STORY FROM THE WORLD OF GRA has won the German Computer Game Award (DCP) in the category „Best Graphic Design“. THE BEAR is the debut work of Clara Deitmar, Julius Dorsel and Luzie Kehle – all former students of the Animationsinstitut at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. The team accepted the award this evening in Munich.
THE BEAR is an interactive experience for tablets. Two friends, the bear and the little one, embark on a journey through a dreamy universe where they collect stars and experience stories together. THE BEAR is about rediscovering the intimate and emotional state just before falling asleep.
Winning the DCP feels like a dream for the team: „It was absolutely amazing to be part of the DCP this year! The nominations alone meant so much to us – winning is just phenomenal. We couldn’t have wished for a better start for our newly founded studio.“
The German Computer Game Award is the most important prize for games in Germany and is endowed with around 800,000€. It is awarded by the Federal Government, represented by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, together with game – Association of the German Games Industry and the Digital Games Culture Foundation.
For Jan Pinkava, Director of the Animationsinstitut, the triumph at the DCP is a strong signal for Ludwigsburg as a games location: “To put it simply: The Filmakademie is in Ludwigsburg, and Ludwigsburg is a growing centre for the creative arts. Our Interactive Media teaching is about content – what the artwork does and what it means – with a special emphasis on storytelling. That is why our talented students produce meaningful work, like THE BEAR. At the Animationsinstitut we are proud of our extraordinary students and their contribution to the region.“
THE BEAR is part of the WORLD OF GRA story world, a universe initiated by the creators at the Animationsinstitut. A very special milestone here was that the team created the visuals and trailers for Stuttgart Animated Week 2024 (consisting of: FMX – Film and Media Exchange, Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film and Animation Production Days).
While still studying Interactive Media, Deitmar, Dorsel and Kehle founded the studio Mucks! Games, under whose name they recently published THE BEAR. The game is available for iOS systems.

Die interaktive Gutenachtgeschichte THE BEAR – A STORY FROM THE WORLD OF GRA hat den Deutschen Computerspielpreis (DCP) in der Kategorie „Bestes Grafikdesign“ gewonnen. THE BEAR ist das Erstlingswerk von Clara Deitmar, Julius Dorsel und Luzie Kehle – alle ehemalige Studierende des Animationsinstituts der Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. Das Team nahm die Auszeichnung heute Abend in München entgegen.
THE BEAR ist eine interaktive Experience für Tablets. Zwei Freunde, der Bär und der Kleine, begeben sich auf eine Reise durch ein träumerisches Universum, wo sie gemeinsam Sterne sammeln und Geschichten erleben. Bei THE BEAR geht es darum, den intimen und emotionalen Zustand kurz vor dem Einschlafen wieder für sich zu entdecken.
Wie ein Traum fühlt sich der Gewinn des DCPs für das Team aus Ludwigsburg an: „Es war total großartig dieses Jahr beim DCP mit dabei sein zu dürfen! Allein die Nominierungen bedeuteten uns unglaublich viel – der Gewinn ist phänomenal. Wir hätten uns keinen besseren Start für unser frisch gegründetes Studio wünschen können.“
Der Deutsche Computerspielpreis ist der bedeutendste Preis für Games in Deutschland und ist mit etwa 800.000€ dotiert. Er wird von der Bundesregierung, vertreten durch das Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz, gemeinsam mit dem game – Verband der deutschen Games-Branche sowie der Stiftung Digitale Spielekultur gGmbH vergeben.
Für Jan Pinkava, Leiter des Animationsinstituts, ist der Triumph beim DCP ein starkes Signal für den Games-Standort Ludwigsburg: „Einfach gesagt: Die Filmakademie befindet sich in Ludwigsburg und Ludwigsburg ist ein wachsender Standort für die Kreativbranche. In unserem Studium der Interaktiven Medien geht es um Inhalte und insbesondere ums Storytelling – es geht um die Wirkung des Kunstwerks und die Aussage dahinter. Deswegen kreieren unsere talentierten Studierenden bedeutsame Arbeiten wie THE BEAR.“ Pinkava fährt fort: „Am Animationsinstitut sind wir stolz auf unsere herausragenden Studierenden und den Beitrag, den sie für die Region leisten.“
THE BEAR ist Teil der Storywelt WORLD OF GRA, ein Universum, das die Macher*innen am Animationsinstitut initiierten. Animating Women* – Films about dreams, desire, the body and the self. In einer zweiteiligen Reihe präsentiert Julia Jesionek ausgewählte historische und aktuelle Animationsfilme von Frauen*. Die KHM-Absolventin hat die Filme der heute teils unbekannten Künstler*innen im Rahmen ihrer schriftlichen Diplomarbeit an der KHM (wieder)entdeckt und wird sie an zwei öffentlichen Filmabenden präsentieren und einführen. „Animating Women*“ ist ein Filmprogramm in zwei Teilen. In der ersten Veranstaltung werden Animationskurzfilme des späten zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts gezeigt. Die ausgewählten Filme veranschaulichen eine visuelle und narrative Entwicklung im Bereich des Animationsfilms, die sich seit den 1970er Jahren durch die zunehmende Teilhabe und Sichtbarkeit weiblicher Filmemacherinnen vollzog. Die vorgestellten Künstlerinnen haben mit ihren Filmen eine neue radikale Ästhetik etabliert, die antithetisch zu den kommerziellen Produktionen und den klassischen Erzählstrukturen des Cartoon Genres funktionierte. Statt Slapstick Humor auf Kosten der objektifizierten Frauenfiguren oder Disneys Prinzessinnen in Not, stehen im animierten Autorinnenfilm des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts komplexe, geheimnisvolle, sensible und ehrliche Protagonistinnen im Vordergrund.
Ob hierbei körperliche und sexuelle Erfahrung, die Auseinandersetzung mit Traum(a) oder vermeintlich Alltägliches behandelt wird, so eint die ausgewählten Filme doch eines: der scharfe und gewitzte Blick, der sich den narrativen Normen eines männlich dominierten Mediums widersetzt. Die Filme werden in chronologischer Reihenfolge gezeigt, da der Aspekt der Entwicklung eine wichtige Rolle in der Beschäftigung mit der Geschichte des animierten Autorinnenfilms spielt.
Der zweite Abend (2. Mai, 19 Uhr, Aula der KHM) schließt mit zeitgenössischer Animationskunst junger Filmemacher*innen an, deren Arbeiten die Bandbreite des „Zeigbaren“ weiter ausdehnen und um queere Perspektiven erweitern. Nähere Informationen zum zweiten Filmabend finden Sie hier .
Die Präsentation „Animating Women*“ soll den Rahmen dessen, was allgemein als Animationskanon wahrgenommen wird, erweitern und die Sichtbarkeit der Künstler*innen fördern. Die Auswahl der Filme verdeutlicht, dass Feminismus in der Animationskunst verschiedene Formen annehmen kann und zeigt wie Animator*innen den visuellen Diskurs um Geschlecht, Identität und Begehren heutzutage auf ihre Weise erweitern.

Julia Jesionek (*1998) studiert seit 2016 an der Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln mit dem Schwerpunkt Animation. Begleitend zu ihrem Diplomfilm „Everythingness“, der bei den Kurzfilmtagen Oberhausen 2024 (1. bis 6. Mai) uraufgeführt wird, hat sie die schriftliche Arbeit „Animating Women – The Evolution of Female Characters and the Impact of Women Animators“ verfasst.
The Festival de Cannes is honoring a cinema legend, awarding its Honorary Palme d’or for the first time to a group: Studio Ghibli.
Alongside the Hollywood greats, the Japanese studio embodied by two superb storytellers, Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, and a host of cult characters, has unleashed a fresh wind on animated film over the past four decades.
I am truly honored and delighted that the studio is awarded the Honorary Palme d’or,“ declares Toshio Suzuki, co-founder of the Studio Ghibli. „I would like to thank the Festival de Cannes from the bottom of my heart. Forty years ago, Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata and I established Studio Ghibli with the desire to bring high-level, high-quality animation to children and adults of all ages. Today, our films are watched by people all over the world, and many visitors come to the Ghibli Museum, Mitaka and Ghibli Park to experience the world of our films for themselves. We have truly come a long way for Studio Ghibli to become such a big organization. Although Miyazaki and I have aged considerably, I am sure that Studio Ghibli will continue to take on new challenges, led by the staff who will carry on the spirit of the company. It would be my greatest pleasure if you look forward to what’s next.“
With this Honorary Palme d’or, Studio Ghibli joins those who have inspired cinematography, whom the Festival de Cannes celebrates every year. “For the first time in our history, it’s not a person but an institution that we have chosen to celebrate,“ said Iris Knobloch, President of the Festival de Cannes, and Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate. “Like all the icons of the Seventh Art, these characters populate our imaginations with prolific, colorful universes and sensitive, engaging narrations. With Ghibli, Japanese animation stands as one of the great adventures of cinephilia, between tradition and modernity“.
The Festival de Cannes was an early explorer of the animated film adventure. In the early years, Walt Disney productions presented short films (1946) and the feature Dumbo (1947). In 1953, Walt Disney himself took Peter Panto the Croisette, where René Laloux won a special Jury Prize in 1973 for his first feature, Fantastic Planet. After a long absence, animation returned to Cannes in force with Shrek (2001) and Shrek 2 (2004), Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence(2004), Persepolis (2007), Waltz with Bashir (2008), which all received awards in the Competition, or even Up, which opened the Festival in 2009. Many other films, such as Kirikou and the Wild Beasts,Inside Out, The Summit of the Gods and more recently, Elemental, and Robot Dreams have also left their mark. Moreover, Un Certain Regard welcomed The Red Turtle (2016), Studios Ghibli’s first collaboration with a European production company.
It all began 40 years ago. The success of Hayao Miyazaki’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind in 1984 enabled him to establish Studio Ghibli with Isao Takahata in 1985. They achieved what seemed to be an impossible feat: independently producing pure masterpieces and conquering the mass market. Producer Toshio Suzuki, a key studio member from the start and soon assuming a full time role, he managed the studio with formidable efficiency, establishing perfect complementarity between the projects of Miyazaki and Takahata, by turns producers and directors.
In four decades and over twenty feature films, Studio Ghibli won over its audiences with works imbued with poetry and with humanistic and environmental commitments. With Porco Rosso, Pom Poko, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbors the Yamadas, The Wind Rises and The Tale of The Princess Kaguya, Studio Ghibli has delivered stories that are as personal as they are universal. They have won prestigious awards, including both the Golden Bear and the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for Spirited Away, and more recently another Oscar for The Boy and the Heron.
In Europe as in the United States, these films are among the animators’ most acclaimed work, between art for art and the commercial challenges of the industry. They are true models, as much for the quality of their writing, directing and animation as for their commitment to extensive aesthetic aspirations. In 2001, the Ghibli Museum, Mitaka opened on the outskirts of Tokyo to showcase the animators’ work and rich heritage, as well as to show short films created for the museum, thus asserting the Studio’s cultural importance. In 2022, the Ghibli Park, a hybrid park facility expressing the world of Studio Ghibli, opened in Aichi Prefecture. Goro Miyazaki, the first Director of the Ghibli Museum, was appointed the Creative Development Director to oversee the park construction
