The production and exploitation of European animation TV content

- European TV animation coproductions account for 36% of all TV animation hours produced, a much higher share than for live TV fiction.
This brand new report: Animation films and TV series in Europe – Key figures has just been published by the European Audiovisual Observatory, part of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. Authors Marta Jiménez Pumares and Gilles Fontaine have compiled a series of key data on the production and exploitation of European animation films and TV series, including a first-ever estimate of the production of TV series.
The report finds that France and the United Kingdom dominate the European animation scene.
The production and exploitation of European animation theatrical films
4 key findings:
- About 55 films produced each year
- A high share of these are coproductions (37%)
- The importance of exports (about 2/3 of admissions come from outside the main producing country)
- A comparably low market share of cinema admissions in Europe (16%), highly variable depending on a limited number of releases.

Ce nouveau rapport intitulé « Les films et séries TV d’animation en Europe – Chiffres clés » est publié par L’Observatoire européen de l’audiovisuel, qui dépend du Conseil de l’Europe à Strasbourg. Les auteurs, Marta Jiménez Pumares et Gilles Fontaine, ont compilé une série de données clés sur la production et l’exploitation des films et séries d’animation européens pour nous proposer une première estimation inédite de la production de séries télévisées.
Au vu du rapport, on constate que la France et le Royaume-Uni dominent la scène européenne de l’animation.

Quatre faits significatifs :
- Environ 55 films produits chaque année
- Une grande partie d’entre eux sont des coproductions (37 %)
- L’importance des exportations (environ 2/3 des entrées sont enregistrées hors du principal pays producteur)
- Une part de marché relativement faible des entrées en salle en Europe (16 %), très variable en fonction d’un nombre restreint de sorties.
Production et exploitation des contenus télévisuels d’animation européens
Trois faits significatifs :
- L’Observatoire évalue le volume annuel de production d’animation TV en Europe à environ 220 titres (téléfilms ou saisons de séries télévisuelles), 5 200 épisodes et 830 heures.(La collecte de données sur la production d’animation TV en Europe se heurte à des contraintes méthodologiques. Ces chiffres doivent être considérés comme des ordres de grandeur et comme une contribution de l’Observatoire européen de l’audiovisuel à une meilleure compréhension du secteur.)
- La France et le Royaume-Uni sont de loin les principaux producteurs de contenus télévisuels d’animation.
- Les coproductions européennes représentent 36 % du volume total de production d’heures d’animation télévisuelle, soit une part nettement supérieure que pour les fictions télévisées réalisées en prise de vue réelle.
