Filmuniversität Babelsberg Konrad Wolf is seeking: W2 Professorship „Animation“

The Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF is a lively centre of art, research, and education.

Renowned experts from the worlds of film and academia provide students with intensive and individual support at Germany’s only film university. Conducting innovative research with, in, and on film and other audio visual media, the university is a cosmopolitan and non-discriminatory space for cultural and social

The Film University is seeking to fill a grade W 2 artistic professorship as of October 1, 2025 for the degree programs “B.F.A. Animation” and “M.F.A. Animation Directing” for the field of “Animation.

Time Limit

In accordance with §45 Brandenburgisches Hochschulgesetz (BbgHG – Brandenburg University and College Act) the professorship will be appointed for an unlimited period. For the purpose of testing the pedagogical skills of applicants from professional or artistic practice, the appointment may be made for a limited period of up to three years and may be terminated after a positive evaluation.

Responsibilities

The Film University is looking for a renowned personality from the field of narrative animated film with a focus on directing, script development and production as well as proof of nationally and internationally successful artistic activity.

The area of responsibility includes history and analysis of animated film as well as teaching theory and practice for the conception and realization of animation projects in accordance with the study regulations of the BFA Animation and MFA Animation Directing programs. A high level of attendance at the university is an absolute prerequisite.

The tasks of the professorship will include in particular:

  • Analysis and communication of specific characteristics of animated film in a current and historical context
  •  Methods for story development, development of storytelling strategies in narrative formats
  • Teaching drawn animation techniques and storyboarding
  • Teaching production skills and distribution strategies
  •  Artistic supervision of student projects, from story development to final production
  • Openness to new technologies in the production of animation and commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Supervision of practical and theoretical theses
  • Conducting colloquia and examinations (admission, subject specifics, graduation)

The profile of the professorship includes participation and presence in academic self-administration and in contributing to the continuous development of the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs, and requires active communication internally and externally for networking and further development of interdisciplinary collaboration. The profile of the advertised position also includes the ability to support the students‘ artistic development process and promote teamwork. An open-minded and empathic attitude is a prerequisite for this.

Particular emphasis is placed on actively promoting and supporting the artistic qualification projects of academic staff.

Recruitment requirements

The legal requirements for hiring are derived from § 43, paragraph 1, numbers 1 to 4a and paragraph 4 BbgHG as follows:

  •  Completed university studies specific to media, or comparable degree
  • pedagogical and didactic aptitude, proven by corresponding animation-specific teaching activities in the university field
  • special aptitude for artistic work, proven in particular by at least five years of professional experience in the field of artistic animation auteur short film and/or animated feature film as well as regular authorial activity, directing activity (direction, story department) and production experience
  • Furthermore, additional artistic achievements must be demonstrated through internationally renowned, independent artistic research work

Expected to provide evidence through relevant projects, or similar:

  •  Proven expertise in drawing animation skills
  •  experience in financing projects and acquiring funding
  • Demonstrate communicative, coordinating and structuring skills, for example through further training and/or experience in the context of (artistic) team processes

Also desirable, to be evidenced by relevant projects, or similar:

  •  good networking in the national and/or international animation film context
  •  good written and spoken English skills and a willingness to teach courses in English. There should also be experience in the field of online teaching.

Teaching responsibilities

Teaching comprises 18 LVS (weekly contact hours per semester) according to the teaching obligation regulation of the state of Brandenburg. The language of instruction at the university is German; individual courses are offered in English.

The professorship is assigned to grade W2. We would like to emphasize that this includes, in particular, the possibility of being granted additional benefits, which can be awarded as part of the appointment. This should also include how latent and explicit forms of discrimination can be countered. These aspects will be considered in the selection decision.
