A snapshot of Ibero-American animation
The ten shortlisted films in the Best Feature category have attracted interest from distributors and audiences worldwide, confirming the growing international reach of Ibero-American animation. Spain stands out among the nominees with five films: “Buffalo Kids”, the country’s second highest-grossing film of 2024; “They Shot the Piano Player”, an animated thriller for adults that tells the tragic story of Brazilian pianist Francisco Tenório Júnior; “Dragonkeeper”, the first co-production between Spain and China, which has been sold to more than 60 countries; “Black Butterflies”, a documentary that recently won the Goya Award for Best Animated Film; and “Rock Bottom”, a film inspired by the music and life of British musician Robert Wyatt.

The former is represented by “Dalia and the Red Book”, an adventure film co-produced by six countries, that combines various animation techniques, and “Robotia, the Movie”, a co-production with Spain and Costa Rica that premiered at the San Sebastián Film Festival. Brazil’s two nominations are for “Noah’s Ark – A Musical Adventure”, an adaptation of composer Vinicius de Moraes’ work that has become Brazil’s most significant animated production, and “Clarice’s Dream”, a children’s film about a highly creative girl dealing with the loss of her mother.

“Olivia & the Clouds”, a 2D animated film and the first full-length animated film produced entirely in the Dominican Republic, rounds out the nominees in this category.
