Prof. Andreas Hykade will step down as the director of Animationsinstitut at Filmakademie on September 30, 2022 in order to take on a new role at the institute that focuses on teaching. From the beginning of the academic year 2022/23, he will be Head of „Animation Directing“.
Throughout his entire career, the acclaimed animation director has perfected the art of seamless, organic transition. Practically from the beginning, his teaching activities ran parallel to his work on his own artistic projects. After eight years in charge of Animationsinstitut, Hykade feels that the right time has come for him to hand over his office:
„When I took over as director, I had set goals for Animationsinstitut, laid down in the strategy paper ‚Filmakademie 2030‘ – most notably the financial security of the institute as well as the specialisation ‚Character Animation‘ and the comprehensive integration of the issue ‚intellectual property (IP)‘ into our curriculum. We were able to achieve all of this. In addition, we pushed on with the internal internationalisation of the institute, successfully navigated our conference FMX through turbulent times and expanded our research & development for the benefit of our students. Above all, however, we succeeded in offering our students a fully fledged course of studies during the difficult time of the pandemic. My thanks go to all those who have actively supported Animationsinstitut in rising to these challenges.“
Success has proved Hykade right: In the rankings of the specialist press, Animationsinstitut is regularly listed among the world’s top 10 animation schools. The institute’s productions have won the most important international prizes – most recently, the VFX production „The Beauty“ caused a sensation with a Student Academy Award.
Petra Olschowski, State Secretary at the Ministry of Science, Research and Arts Baden-Wuerttemberg, comments: „Professor Andreas Hykade has shaped Animationsinstitut at Filmakademie into one of the world’s leading training institutions for animation. His proposals in the strategy paper „Filmakademie 2030“ have proved to be groundbreaking, both in terms of content and structure. We are very happy to support the expansion of the institute he conceived. I would like to express our sincere thanks to Professor Hykade for his great service to the institute. We wish him all the best for his future role as Head of Animation Directing as well as for his artistic work.“
Despite all the successes, there is still the question of unfinished business. Hykade: „I would have liked to see more dynamism regarding our goal of becoming a leading European region for animation, VFX and games. Other countries are pulling ahead of Baden-Württemberg in various fields. But I am convinced: We could make up ground if we focused on the development of intellectual property in all animation crafts. Perhaps a new generation of young artists can support us in taking the necessary steps.“ What would Hykade like to pass on to Animationsinstitut? „Our maxim in the past years has been: ‚The person is more important than the project.‘ It is my hope that our students as well as our team and the lecturers keep up this spirit.“
Prof. Thomas Schadt, Managing Director of Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg, comments: „Professor Hykade deserves our deepest thanks for his important work as head of Animationsinstitut! For me personally, he was and continues to be a formative artistic initiator on the Ludwigsburg campus. His position on the sometimes fraught interrelations between people, art and industrial production has also kept me alert to the importance of a sense of care for our students. I was all the more pleased to know that he will keep playing a central role in teaching on campus.“
Andreas Hykade would like to make creative use of the freedom he is to gain. The muse is calling. Several film, book and music projects for adults and children are in the pipeline. What’s more, he also wants to turn to the written word: „My time as head of Animationsinstitut was so exciting and moving that it definitely calls for an artistic treatment. I have two different working titles that I have yet to choose from: „The Beautiful Kingdom“ or „The Boss Who Cried“.“
About Andreas Hykade
Fate must have had a hand in this: Andreas Hykade, born in 1968 in the Bavarian pilgrimage town of Altötting, has witnessed and helped shape the founding and rise of Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg from the very beginning. A student in Albrecht Ade’s legendary animation class at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design, he moved to Ludwigsburg in 1991 and was one of the first graduates of the new film school in 1995. Represented by Studio Film Bilder in Stuttgart, the exceptional animator with the unmistakable style quickly established himself in the animation scene after his studies and was awarded numerous international prizes for short films such as „We Lived in Grass“ or „Ring of Fire“. Hykade’s animated video clips „Zehn kleine Jägermeister“ and „Walkampf“ for the band Die Toten Hosen were equally successful. His animated series „TOM & the Slice of Bread with Strawberry Jam & Honey“, co-produced by SWR and a long-running hit on the German children’s channel KiKa & others for 20 years, still enjoys cult status among parents and children alike. Highly acclaimed, award-winning works were to follow, among others „The Runt“, „Love & Theft“, „Nuggets“ as well as, most recently, „Altötting“, inspired by the special devotion to Mary in his Bavarian hometown. In 2019, Andreas Hykade was invited to become a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Hykade began his teaching career in 2001 as a lecturer in „Filmgestaltung 2 Animation“ (Experimental Filmmaking) at Filmakademie. Following stints with the Royal College of Art London, Kassel Art Academy and Harvard University, he returned to Ludwigsburg in 2011 as Professor of Animation. In October 2014, he was first appointed the acting, in April 2015 the official director of Animationsinstitut. He will remain associated with Filmakademie even after his departure from this post. As Head of Animation Directing from October 2022, he will be able to offer comprehensive advice for the graduate students of this specialisation and their final-year films – from the idea to the finished project to a strong start into their professional lives.

Prof. Andreas Hykade wird zum 30. September 2022 seine Tätigkeit als Leiter des Animationsinstituts der Filmakademie beenden, um sich mit Beginn des Studienjahres 2022/23 als Leiter „Animation Directing“ am Animationsinstitut ausschließlich der Lehre widmen zu können.
Die Kunst des nahtlosen, organischen Übergangs hat der namhafte Animationsfilmer über seine gesamte Karriere perfektioniert. Praktisch von Anfang an lief seine Dozententätigkeit parallel zur Arbeit an eigenen künstlerischen Projekten. Nach acht Jahren, in denen er zusätzlich die Gesamtverantwortung für das Animationsinstitut der Filmakademie trug, ist für Prof. Hykade nun der richtige Zeitpunkt für eine Amtsübergabe gekommen:
„Als ich die Leitung übernahm, hatte ich für das Animationsinstitut Ziele gesteckt, festgehalten im Strategiepapier „Filmakademie 2030“. Dazu zählten vor allem die finanzielle Absicherung des Instituts sowie die Einführung der Studienvertiefung „Character Animation“ und die umfassende Integration des Themas „Geistiges Eigentum (IP)“ in unser Curriculum. Dies alles konnten wir erreichen. Zusätzlich konnten wir intern die Internationalisierung der Filmakademie vorantreiben, unsere Fachkonferenz FMX erfolgreich durch stürmische Zeiten navigieren und unsere Forschung & Entwicklung ausbauen. Vor allem aber ist es uns gelungen, unseren Studierenden während der schwierigen Zeit der Pandemie ein vollwertiges Studium anbieten zu können. Mein Dank gilt hier allen, die das Animationsinstitut bei der Bewältigung dieser Aufgaben tatkräftig unterstützt haben.“
Der Erfolg gibt Prof. Hykade recht: In den Rankings der Fachpresse wird das Animationsinstitut regelmäßig unter den weltweiten Top 10 der Animationsschulen geführt. So haben Produktionen des Instituts mittlerweile die wichtigsten internationalen Auszeichnungen erhalten – zuletzt sorgte die mit einem Studierenden-Oscar ausgezeichnete VFX-Produktion „The Beauty“ für Furore.
Staatssekretärin Petra Olschowski: „Professor Andreas Hykade hat das Animationsinstitut der Filmakademie zu einer weltweit führenden Ausbildungseinrichtung für Animation geformt. Für das Strategiepapier „Filmakademie 2030“ hat er zudem wegweisende inhaltliche und strukturelle Impulse gesetzt. Den von ihm konzipierten Ausbau des Animationsinstituts unterstützen wir sehr gerne. Für seine großen Verdienste um das Institut danke ich Professor Hykade ausdrücklich und wünsche ihm für seine zukünftige leitende Tätigkeit in der Lehre des Animationsinstituts sowie für seine weiteren künstlerischen Aktivitäten alles Gute.“
Bei allen Erfolgen bleibt die Frage nach dem Unerledigten. Dazu Prof. Hykade: „Beim formulierten Ziel, den Standort zu einer führenden europäischen Region für Animation, VFX und Games weiterzuentwickeln, hätte ich mir eine größere Dynamik gewünscht. Auf unterschiedlichen Feldern sind andere Medienstandorte dabei, an Baden-Württemberg vorbeizuziehen. Doch ich bin überzeugt, wir könnten Boden wettmachen, wenn wir uns stärker auf die Entwicklung von geistigem Eigentum in allen Animations-Gewerken fokussieren. Vielleicht können uns die nachkommenden Generationen junger Künstlerinnen und Künstler bei den nächsten notwendigen Schritten unterstützen.“ Was möchte Prof. Hykade dem Animationsinstitut mit auf den Weg geben? „Unsere Maxime in den vergangenen Jahren war: „Der Mensch ist wichtiger als das Projekt.“ Ich würde mir wünschen, dass sich unsere Studierenden wie auch Mitarbeitenden und Dozierenden weiterhin von diesem Geist leiten lassen.“
Prof. Thomas Schadt: „Prof. Hykade gebührt für seine wichtige Arbeit als Leiter des Animationsinstituts allergrößter Dank! Für mich persönlich war und ist er prägender künstlerischer Impulsgeber auf dem Campus Ludwigsburg. Seine Haltung zur mitunter verschleißenden Beziehung von Mensch, Kunst und industrieller Produktion hat auch mich zudem darin wachgehalten, für Studierende der Filmakademie ein besonderes Fürsorgebewusstsein zu entwickeln. Umso mehr hat es mich gefreut, ihn nun an zentraler Stelle der Lehre auch zukünftig auf dem Campus zu wissen.“
Den für sich gewonnenen künstlerischen Freiraum möchte Andreas Hykade wieder verstärkt kreativ nutzen. Mehrere Film-, Buch- und Musikprojekte für Erwachsene und Kinder sind in Planung. Darüber hinaus will er sich in Zukunft verstärkt dem geschriebenen Wort zuwenden: „Meine Zeit als Leiter des Animationsinstituts war so spannend und bewegt, dass sie auf jeden Fall künstlerisch verarbeitet werden muss. Ich habe zwei unterschiedliche Arbeitstitel, zwischen denen ich mich noch nicht entschieden habe: „The Beautiful Kingdom“ oder „The Boss Who Cried“.
Über Andreas Hykade
Diese Beziehung hat etwas von Schicksal: Andreas Hykade, geboren 1968 im bayerischen Wallfahrtsort Altötting, hat die Gründung und den Aufstieg der Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg von Anfang an miterlebt und mitgestaltet. Der Schüler in Albrecht Ades legendärer Trickfilmklasse an der Kunstakademie Stuttgart wechselte 1991 nach Ludwigsburg und gehörte 1995 zu den ersten Absolventinnen und Absolventen der neuen Filmhochschule. Vertreten durch das Stuttgarter Studio „Film Bilder“, fasste der Ausnahme-Trickfilmer mit dem unverwechselbaren Stil nach seinem Studium rasch Fuß in der Animationsszene und wurde für Kurzfilme wie „We Lived in Grass“ oder „Ring of Fire“ mit zahlreichen internationalen Preisen ausgezeichnet. Ebenso erfolgreich waren seine animierten Videoclips „Zehn kleine Jägermeister“ und „Walkampf“ für die Band Die Toten Hosen. Kultstatus bei Eltern wie Kindern genießt bis heute seine Trickfilmserie „TOM und das Erdbeermarmeladebrot mit Honig“, koproduziert vom SWR und seit 20 Jahren Dauerbrenner auf KiKA & Co. Es folgten hochgelobte, ebenfalls preisgekrönte Arbeiten wie „The Runt“, „Love & Theft“, „Nuggets“ und zuletzt „Altötting“, inspiriert von der besonderen Marienverehrung in seiner bayerischen Heimatstadt. 2019 wurde Andreas Hykade in die Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences berufen.
Seine Lehrtätigkeit begann Hykade 2001 als Dozent der „Filmgestaltung 2 Animation“ an der Filmakademie. Nach Stationen am Royal College of Art London, an der Kunsthochschule Kassel und der Harvard University kehrte er 2011 als Professor für Animationsfilm nach Ludwigsburg zurück. Im Oktober 2014 übernahm er erst die kommissarische, seit April 2015 auch die offizielle Leitung des Animationsinstituts. Der Filmakademie bleibt er auch nach seinem Abgang von diesem Posten verbunden. Als Leiter Animation Directing kann er ab Oktober 2022 die Diplomprojekte und die Studierenden dieser Studienvertiefung künftig von der Idee über das fertige Projekt bis hin zu einem kraftvollen Eintritt ins Berufsleben federführend begleiten.
