Was, ja was wäre, wenn vor 65 Millionen Jahren ein bestimmter Meteroit vorbei gesaust wäre an unserem Planeten und nicht, wie es die gängige Lehrmeinung derzeit behauptet, durch seinen Aufprall auf dem blauen Planeten das Aussterben der Dinosaurier verursachte?
Mit dieser geschickten und toll visualisierten Überlegung erzählen die Macher von Findet Nemo und Alles steht Kopf nun von einer Welt, in der tatsächlich Dinosaurier und Mensch gemeinsam ums Überleben kämpfen. Die Dinosaurier haben sich inzwischen zu Farmern entwickelt, die den frühen Siedlern des Wilden Westens gleichen und sich von mühseligen Ackerbau und aufreibender Hühnerzucht ernähren. Arlo, ein junger Apathosaurier ist der kleine Sohn einer solchen Familie, der sich schon früh im rauen Leben bewähren muss. Seine Träumereien gefährden die Ernte, die immer wieder von einem kleinen Räuber bedroht wird. Seine Unfähigkeit, den kleinen Schädling zu erschlagen, führen zu einer tödlichen Katastrophe und ein folgenschwerer Unfall läßt Arlo bewusstlos in den Fluss fallen, der ihn in das weite Unbekannte heraus trägt, von wo er aus sich auf den gefährlichen und ereignisreichen Weg nach Hause macht. Und ausgerechnet der kleine Räuber, ein wildes Menschenjunges namens Spot, erweist sich dabei nun für Arlo als Helfer und schließlich auch als Freund. Die Idee einer Geschichte vom Erwachsenwerden eines Jungen mit seinem Hund ist nicht neu, das der Hund hier aber der Mensch ist, ist reizvoll und gekonnt in Szene gesetzt. Und macht demütig vor Tier und Natur. Die nämlich ist der eigentliche Hauptdarsteller im Film und einfach grandios in Szene gesetzt worden. Man ertappt sich dabei, Blätter, Bäche und Gebirge zu bestaunen, die die Handlung verschwenderisch umsäumen und kann gar nicht glauben, dass dies das Werk von ein paar hundert Animationskünstlern sein soll. Das der Film jetzt wenige Wochen nach Pixars „Alles steht Kopf“ in die Kinos kommt, ist sein größtes Problem, denn an dieses Meisterwerk reicht die solide Story nicht heran, alles andere in diesem Jahr lässt dieser so amüsante wie nachdenkliche Dino-Western weit hinter sich!

This year, Pixar surprised me with an amazing script for Inside Out. It was a great and emotional film that is now on the list of my favorites Animation of all time. With The Good Dinosaur, I was having a huge expectation that the film would also make me emotive. During the Annecy Film Festival this year, I had the chance to see the director Peter Sohn talking about the film, the creative process, how he came up with the idea and he also presented us a shot where Arlo was explaining Spot the meaning of family. This scene made me cry and I was looking forward to see the whole animation at the Movies. I went to see it with a very high expectation just considering this sneaky peek. Unfortunately, the film did not reach completely my expectations. It was entertaining, but I did not cry again, maybe because I already knew this specific scene and I also did not laugh so much. The story is very creative, sweet, and the points about family, friendship and the maturation of the character were well treated. But it’s not so special like the script from Inside out or Lion king.
Visually it’s very impressive how they made such a beautiful environment. I’ve loved the water simulation and the texture from the mountains, the stones and all the elements. Technically, it has no negative comment. It was really great to see that on the screen. The Design from the main character I did not enjoy so much and I personally think that he did not match so well with the Background. Maybe if that universe was a little bit more stylized, it would have more balance. The Animation is great and the acting from the little boy Spot, even having no dialogues, was very well solved. The protagonist Arlo had not so much appealing for me and I had not so much empathy for him like I had, from example, with Simba from Lion King. In general, it’s not a bad Movie, but it’s also not the best from Pixar. From one to five, I would give three stars to it.
