When you’re a modeling artist, you don’t need to know anything about rendering and rendering resolution. However, in most other cases you need to adjust the size of your rendered images to the needs of your specific job. For example, if you have a real live scene, it’s crucial to adjust the format of your rendered image, so that it fits nicely into that camera shot.
Here is an example in my blog about a compositing work: two photographs and my rendering had to fit nicely together: http://www.maxschoenherr.de/clock/int…
An excellent blog entry about Film Gate and Resolution Gate (only the latter interests us for rendering) is this one by Paolo Mazzoccato: https://www.fisheyestudio.it/en/blog-…
